Getting Started with State News Hubs

State News Hubs are a way for local news publishers to share stories with one another through a simple and efficient feed.

State News Hubs are designed to help publishers reach a geographically broader audience and earn additional revenue.

As a contributor, publishers can reach a broader audience through distribution to other local news websites across the state or region.

As a host publisher in the network, local news organizations can provide broader news coverage to their readers and can participate in new revenue opportunities.

Here's how it's working in California

The California News Hub is hosted by KQED.

Revenue:

  • Currently sponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium providing monthly revenue shared with the local publishers hosting the feed.

Content & distribution:

  • Curating stories from 25-30 contributors
  • Feed is embedded on 30 local news websites.

Audience

  • Currently reaching 1.5M views across the state and growing; This includes 3+M monthly ad impressions and growing.

If you’re interested in starting a news hub for your state get in touch with us at info@distributedmedialab.com.

Hosts can collect a larger share of network revenue by securing advertisers.

Local publishers also have the opportunity to sell sponsorships that run across the State News Hub network. This is a great option for publishers with large advertisers who want to reach beyond a local audience – like regional brands, statewide organizations, or tourism clients looking to attract audiences from other parts of California.
